Q. Why are car keys so expensive for the newer cars?
A. Today, most cars have factory installed electronic security systems. These systems require that the key has a computer chip imbedded in the head. Each chip contains a unique 32 digit encrypted code. If the car’s computer does not recognize the code in the key, it will not start. In fact, the car may be disabled for a time. New keys need to be cut and programmed into the car’s computer. Until now cars frequently had to be towed to a dealer.
